20/6/13 - CABINET APPROVES INCREASE IN THE CARE AND PROTECTION ALLOWANCE FOR CHILDREN IN INSTITUTIONAL RESIDENTIAL HOMES

6/20/2013
Cabinet has agreed to an increase in the current Care and Protection (C&P) Allowance from $60 per child per month, to $100 per month per child, specifically for children in institutional residential homes.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni.

The Minister said that currently, to ensure that financial support is provided by the State, the Ministry administers a cash grant of $60 per child per month, to residential care institutions for children in Fiji.

She said that given the rise in the cost of living in Fiji, C&P Allowance of $60 per child per month is not adequate in relation to the responsibilities of care that is inclusive of the holistic needs of the child in monetary terms, thus the increase to $100 per child per month.

Currently, the Ministry works with a total of nine residential institutions with a total of 129 children.
