Fiji and South Korea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen defence cooperation between the two countries through joint military capacity building across a wide-range of areas relating to defence and national security.

The MOU was signed this week in Seoul by the Fijian Minister for Defence and National Security, Hon. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, and his South Korean counterpart, General Han Min-koo.

The MOU specifically covers cooperation in military education and training, military technology assistance, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, international peacekeeping, military medicine and health services, military sporting activities and cultural exchanges.

Minister Kubuabola said the MOU would enhance the strong friendship already enjoyed between the Fijian and South Korean militaries and strengthen the capabilities of both military forces.

The MOU’s implementation will be closely monitored by a working group of senior officials from both countries.

In the lead-up to the signing, Minister Kubuabola also met with Korea’s Special Warfare & Counter Terrorism Commander Major General CHO Jung-sul. During his tour of South Korea, Minister Kubuabola visited the Seoul National Cemetery to pay respects at a wreath laying ceremony to fallen South Korean servicemen and women.

Minister, Kubuabola was accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to South Korea, H.E. Ambassador Filimone Kau, RFMF Chief of Staff Col. Litea Seruiratu and Defence Ministry Senior Advisor Mr. Joji Dumukuro.
