PRIME MINISTER RECEIVES MR JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAU

8/11/2017
Suva, August 10 – Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama today received a courtesy call from the President of the Ocean Futures Society and renowned film producer, Mr Jean-Michel Cousteau.

The Ocean Futures Society is a non-profit marine conservation and educational organisation that seeks to serve as a 'Voice for the Ocean' by communicating the critical bond between people and the sea and the importance of policy that helps preserve the ocean environment.

Prime Minister Bainimarama, in his capacity as co-President of the United Nations Oceans Summit, thanked Mr Cousteau for supporting Fiji’s international advocacy for marine conservation and for his own work to help preserve the health of oceans in Fiji, the South Pacific and around the world.

The two men discussed the importance of raising public awareness on the current state of oceans and marine resources as part of the global effort to realise Sustainable Development Goal 14, which calls for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.

The meeting also covered the work carried out by the Oceans Futures Society and how Fiji can support the society’s work to rally the community of nations to take action against pollution and overfishing.

For over 40 years, Mr Cousteau has dedicated himself to alerting the international community to the threats facing oceans and marine resources around the world. He has produced over 80 films, many of which have received international recognition and acclaim. As Chairman and President of the Ocean Futures Society, My. Cousteau meets leaders and policy makers, along with actors in the private sector and at the grassroots level, to help coordinate the global effort to preserve underwater ecosystems and support marine life.
