PRIME MINISTER UPDATES AUSTRALIAN MINISTER ON WINSTON RECOVERY

Following the National Multi-Faith Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for the Anniversary of Cyclone Winston, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama met with Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific Hon. Concetta Fierravanti-Wells to discuss the the progress of Cyclone Winston rebuilding efforts.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister discussed Fiji’s preparatory work for his Presidency of COP 23, the United Nations negotiations on climate change, and Australia’s support for Fiji’s presidential agenda.

The Prime Minister also thanked Minister Fierravanti-Wells for attending the national service and for Australia’s assistance since Cyclone Winston struck Fiji last year. To date, the Australian Government has provided $35 million in Winston-related assistance to repair and rebuild schools, health facilities, damaged markets and restore water and sanitation services.

Minister Fierravanti-Wells was accompanied by the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji Margaret Twomey. The Minister said she will also meet with non-government organisations in Fiji who assisted in the distribution of Australian assistance after the cyclone.
