TATE & LYLE COMMITTED TO BUYING FIJIAN SUGAR

12/2/2016
Tate & Lyle PLC, a London-based sugar refiner, has reasserted its commitment to a long-term partnership with the Fijian Government at a meeting held in London with a Fijian sugar delegation led by Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Fijian delegation also included the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Mr. Yogesh Karan, and the Chairman of the Fiji Sugar Corporation, Mr. Vishnu Mohan.

During the talks, Tate & Lyle expressed their keen desire to strengthen ties with the Fijian Government and offered technical support and assistance for the implementation of the ongoing reforms in Fiji’s sugar industry.

The discussions also covered the ongoing recovery of Fiji’s sugar industry in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston and recent developments in the global sugar market, namely the expiration of Fiji’s preferential access to European markets in the third quarter of 2017 and the U.K.’s planned exit from the European Union. Tate & Lyle also offered their full support towards the cyclone-recovery efforts.

“We welcome Tate & Lyle’s renewed commitment to our long-standing partnership and look forward to growing our relationship in the sugar trade. My Government is confident in the health and sustainable future of our sugar industry, and we are pleased that Tate & Lyle shares our optimism,” said Prime Minister Bainimarama.
