The Rewa River is not expected to break its bank now that rainfall has eased. The Disaster Management Centre (DISMAC) reports that the Hydrological Department has advised that the floodwaters will not recede rapidly as there is much water from the main Rewa River system. Flood water levels at tributaries to the Rewa River are currently measured at Cyclone Kina levels to see how dangerous the situation is.
At the Nabukaluka tributary, at 1pm this afternoon the water level had peaked at 7.23metres. At the Nairukuruku tributary, the water level at 11am today had peaked at 7.24metres below the Cyclone Kina level of 11metres. At the Navolau tributary, at 3.3opm this afternoon the water level was 10.37metres and was expected to peak at 5.30pm – the Cyclone Kina level for this tributary is 18 metres. The Waila River flats is becoming a threat and DISMAC reports that evacuation is necessary for this area. With the flooding situation, DISMAC reports that Navua Town is still under water and all roads to Navua both from Suva and Sigatoka are closed to traffic. Edinburgh Road will remain closed to all traffic for risk of land slide and Veisari is also under water around the old Queens Road. For bridges, the Sawani Bridge is still closed to all traffic and the Naqali Bridge which is under water has also been closed to all traffic. DISMAC also reported that all Chief Executive Officers have been advised to release Civil Servants in affected areas to help in the evacuation operation. The Military has also mobilized an evacuation team that is to help out in the evacuation operation in Navua and food distribution in Korovou and other affected areas in Tailevu. The Navy and its diving team with two dinghies is also helping in the evacuation in Navua. A Navy Diving team is responsible for the Rewa Delta and Tailevu area.
Meanwhile, the five patients of Navua Hospital have been evacuated to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. There are currently 69 evacuation centres with 33 in the Central Division and 36 in the Western Division. -End- |
