Fiji continues to look forward to close co-operation and friendship with the United States of America, the Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said.
He made the comment to mark the USA’s 228th Independence Day celebrated every year on July 4th.
"For the most part, Fiji has enjoyed friendly relations with America, both as a British possession and as a sovereign state.
"There were strains following the coups of 1987 and the unlawful takeover of Parliament in 2000. But our links were fully restored," the PM said.
Mr Qarase said we in Fiji have common concerns with the US not the least of which are international and regional security.
"It is in both our interests – and in the interests of the larger community of nations to work together against terrorism and the threats it poses to peace and stability.
"We must also pool our resources in the fight against transnational crime," he said.
PM Qarase said Fiji looks forward to increasing trade with the US and to attracting more American investment.
"The success of Natural Waters of Viti Ltd in gaining a substantial share of the competitive US bottled water market, demonstrates that we have the capacity to make products which meet the demands of American consumers.
"We must now seek new US export opportunities. We are seeing some US investment flowing into our rapidly expanding tourism industry."
As America is one of Fiji’s traditional visitor markets, Mr Qarase said this year we are experiencing significant increases in US visitors and are forecasting a total for the year of 62,000 – over six percent higher than in 2003.
The Prime Minister said Fiji was happy when the US responded positively to the request for the return of the Peace Corps.
"The arrival of another group of volunteers about two weeks ago brings the current contingent of Peace Corps members in our country to 46.
"They are helping Fiji in many areas, including youth work, community development and health, environmental education and resource management."
PM Qarase said their efforts are very much appreciated as the nation moves forward with the task of rebuilding Fiji.
