He called on the President, His Excellency Ratu Josefa Iloilo, yesterday morning and followed this up with his letter of resignation.

The Office of the President has informed both the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga of the resignation.

The resignation is effective from Friday, 26th November 2004, the date Ratu Jope decided not to appeal his conviction and sentence by the High Court.

Since he has served as Vice president for more than three years but less than four years, his pension entitlement is 30% of his salary at the time of his resignation.

With the resignation of Ratu Jope Naucabalavu Seniloli, the provision of section 92 of the Constitution comes into play. This covers the filling of a vacancy in the position of Vice President.

Under this, the President makes a nomination and the new appointment, as Vice president becomes effective when the BLV gives its support to the nomination. Because Ratu Jope has not served out his full five-year term as Vice president, his successor will serve as Vice president for the remainder of Ratu Jope's term.

The President, His Excellency Ratu Josefa Iloilo, is expected to hold consultations with the Prime Minister, Honourable Laisenia Qarase, and the Chairman of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga, Ratu Ovini Bokini, before making his nomination.

Ratu Jope was appointed Vice president on 25th March 2001. His five-year term would end on 24th March 2004. However, since Ratu Jope has resigned with effect from 26th November,2004, his successor's term will begin from the date his or her nomination is supported by the BLV until 24th March,2006.
