The Fiji Times has launched a national appeal for the victims of the tsunamis that struck at least eight Asian countries, killing more than 26,000 people. To start the appeal, Fiji Times Limited chairman Ross McDonald yesterday handed over a $5000 donation from the company, saying everyone should support the initiative. (FT) Fiji does not have the equipment nor facilities to warn people of approaching tsunamis. National Disaster Management Centre director Joeli Rokovada said decision makers should take heed of the crisis in Asia and do something about Fiji’s early warning system. Fiji is located in one of the world’s most active areas for seismic and volcanic activity – the Pacific Rim. (FT) Fiji citizens in tsunami-ravaged countries in Asia are safe. Feedback from India and Indonesia revealed that Fiji citizens were not in areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Fiji’s High Commissioner to India Luke Rokovada said they were monitoring the situation. “So far, there’s been no reports of Fiji residents stranded or affected as a result of the tidal wave. But we’ll continue to monitor the situation,” he said. (FT) The Fiji Red Cross Society is appealing to the people of Fiji for financial contribution to assist the victims of the horrific tsunami disaster in Asia. Fiji Red Cross director general Alison Cupit said the Red Cross national societies were working on the ground within hours of the disaster helping evacuate survivors, dispense first aid and providing relief materials such as tents and blankets as well as food. (FS) Works Minister Savenaca Draunidalo says the Government is trying its best to completely eradicate water problems. (DP) -End- |
