Higher Education Advisory Board and Secretariat appointed

A Higher Education Advisory Board and Secretariat has been appointed and tasked with the responsibility of managing the accreditation and approval processes of Higher Education Providers establishing institutions in Fiji.

According to the Minister for Education, Mr Filipe Bole,the recent past has witnessed an influx of higher education providers establishing institutions in Fiji, which led to the establishment of a proposed Higher Education Bill which regulates the higher education sector.

“In May 2007, the Ministry of Education facilitated the drafting of the Higher Education Bill,further work is now being done in the re-drafting process, in the meantime, approval has been granted by Cabinet for the setting up of the Secretariat and the appointment of members of the Higher Education Advisory Board,”the Minister for Education said.

Members of the Higher Education Advisory Board and Secretariat are:

[a] Professor Rajesh Chandra - Chairperson

[b] Dr Kesaia Seniloli - Member

[c] Dr Eddie McCaig - Member

[d] Ms Taufa Vakatale - Member

[e] Dr Ganesh Chand - Member

[f] Pt. Kamlesh Arya - Member

[g] Ms Emi Rabukawaqa - Member

[h] and any other additional member(s) the Minister may wish to appoint to the Commission from time to time as he deems necessary.

Funding for the Secretariat was approved in the Ministry’s budget for this year while the redrafting of the Higher Education Promulgation is expected to be completed shortly and will be under review through a consultative process before it is submitted for Cabinet’s consideration.
