Minister for Education, Mr Filipe Bole has commended the success of the Money Smart programme, that to date has a total of 18,000 form three students participating in.

The programme which kick started in March last year, was initiated by the Fiji Development Bank after which a study found that people were poor in managing money.

Labelled an excellent concept and proactive in terms of giving children an early start in good money management, Mr Bole highlighted that no one is too young to learn how to use and save money.

“Every one is a consumer, even school children and there is a real need for a simple and practical ways to empower children to make informed decisions about money matters now and later on as adults,”the Minister said.

While the programme is gaining momentum among form three students, Mr Bole adds that Money Smart programme is nationally assessed and is worth 30% of the commercial assessment in the Fiji Junior Examination.

He adds that while students are given exciting opportunities to visualize and plan their own business ventures for the future they are simultaneously being taught business ethics such as honesty, hard work, time management and working smart.

The Minister has urged all organisations to contribute to children’s education through programmes that teach school children useful life skills from an early age.
