The President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has written to the Commonwealth and United Nations requesting their support for a proposed political forum. A government statement yesterday said the proposal had originated from a resolution passed at a special National Council for Building a Better Fiji meeting on April 15. The NCBBF subsequently called on Ratu Josefa to convene a forum in collaboration with the NCBBF to be held no later than the end of the month. (FT)
The formulation of a Higher Education Bill that was given the go-ahead by the interim Government through the setting up of the High Education Advisory Board received a good response from education stakeholders yesterday. Education Ministry director exams Salote Rabuka said high education was essential for any country to be able to achieve a sustainable level of economic and social development. (FT)
Fiji has the highest number of deaf people in the South Pacific 51,321 people out of a population of 918,675 are deaf or have a hearing impairment. The statistics, provided by Carabez Alliance, also show that of the estimated deaf population, 17,449 are children. (FT)
