Prime Minister Commodore Ratu Voreqe Bainimarama today encouraged the people of Rotuma to grow more local food rather than to rely on imported food items.
The PM made the statement in light of the rising global oil and food prices.
I know that here in Rotuma you are also feeling the impact of rising oil and food prices. There is no quick fix to this challenge as we are largely depended on imports of petroleum and related products and food grains such as wheat and rice.
The PM said the Interim Government has undertaken some initiatives like tax and duty relief to cushion the impact of increasing prices, but the Government is still encouraging people all over the country to grow more local food.
The only sustainable solution to combating rising food prices is to grow more of our own produce, he said.
The PM told the chiefs and people of Rotuma that he was pleased to see the abundance of staple food on the island.
I encourage you to continue working hard, grow as much produce as possible, create surpluses for sustainable export opportunities and most of all safeguard your culture and always uphold your values, he said.
