The Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, yesterday reminded the chiefs of Cakaudrove of the importance of gazetting their village laws to prevent disputes. His comment came in response to a question from Tui Kama Ratu Seru Taqali, who queried the legality of village laws. (FT)

The newly established Tobacco Control Enforcement Unit wants the State to allocate an additional $1million a year to address smokers' rehabilitation. Officer-in-charge Ifiremi Corerega said the State generated $59 million a year in taxes from the sale of cigarettes and it would be advisable that a portion of it assist those willing to give up smoking. The National Disaster Management Office (DISMAC) has called on people living near low lying areas to pay attention to the flash flood warnings by the Fiji Meteorological Service. The Ministry of Education has also called on all school managements to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of students. (FT)

Fiji nationals in China are safe after news of the devastation of China's largest earthquake in 30 years. Fiji's ambassador to China Sir James Ah Koy said they had not received any report of missing or dead persons and services were normal since the earthquake was four hours' flight away. (FT)

Efforts to develop ecu-tourism at Molituva Village, in Kuku, Tailevu, are progressing well. And it is thanks to the Tappoo Group for donating a wide range of traditional costumes and uniforms specially designed for villagers to entertain tourists who visit the old fort at Molituva. Tappoo Group director Harish Tappoo said the company hoped the uniforms and costumes would jump start the villagers' efforts towards their own development and income generation potential. (FT)
