The Ministry of Education is currently engaged in a project that promotes Good Citizenship Skills with the vision of “Educating a Child (Individual) to be Informed, Committed and be a Responsible Citizen.”
The Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sport, Mr Filipe Bole said the Citizenship Education Project (CEP) encourages individuals and children via a “Whole School Approach-based” programme to foster, peace and justice, conflict management, conflict resolution, listening, dialogue, respect for one and all, transparency and justice, amongst other things, in our young citizens.
“CEP has a taskforce, which is widely represented by teachers and teacher educators. The project continues to build the capacity of teachers for quality teaching and learning in our schools. The taskforce is working diligently at building these themes into the current curricula,” Mr Bole said.
The Education Minister said the teaching of Citizenship Education begins from early school years and gradually builds on a range of complex issues in progressive years.
He highlighted that the Project also encourages partnership and shared responsibilities between the school and the community.
“The teaching of Technical Vocational Education and Training is also offered at secondary school to meet the needs of students who are pursuing a trade in response to workforce demands,” he said.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Enterprise Education, Sports Academies, the Family Life Education Programme, Scripture Union in Schools (SUIS), the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Movements, are among the many practical and functional programmes that develop life skills.
