Ministry confirms space shortages at morturies

The Ministry of Health, Women and Social Welfare’s Central/Eastern Division wishes to inform everyone that mortuaries in the Division’s four hospitals are facing serious space shortages.

These four facilities include the main Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva and also Korovou, Navua and Wainibokasi Health Centres.

Even the Suva private Hospital has reported it has a full mortuary.

“We need to request the public to remove their deceased from the four centres for burial as soon as applicable,” said Dr Eloni Tora, the General Manager Hospital Services, CWM Hospital.

“We also request everyone to plan for early burials of their deceased as much as possible. “

“The long delay in removing bodies will deny other members of the public access to mortuary services,” Dr Tora added.

He also said it would be essential if families are considerate over the matter because time normally allowed for keeping bodies in public mortuaries is limited to three days per family.

Dr Tora added that hospital staff dealing with mortuaries in these four centres conveyed this report after assessing the situation last week, saying that they have had to deal with three extra bodies at CWM Hospital last Thursday because of a shortage of space.
