1/7/08 - Govt to reactivate the Tripartite Forum

Cabinet has endorsed the re-activation of the Tripartite Forum to promote social dialogue on important national labour matters in future.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Labour, Industrial Relations, Employment, Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment, Mr Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi.

Mr Vayeshnoi said that the Forum would provide for the effective implementation of the new Employment Relations (ER) Promulgation, which can only be achieved through tripartism and good faith social dialogue.

Mr Vayeshnoi said that this was also in line with the objectives of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The Minister also briefed Cabinet on the deliberations of the 97th Session of the International Labour Conference to reduce the global decent work deficit.

As an ILO Member State, Fiji was represented by a tripartite delegation led by the Minister, two Government delegates, and one each from the Fiji Trades Union Congress and the Fiji Employers Federation.

The Minister said that Fiji’s participation was a success, with commendations received by the ILO Director General, Mr. Juan Sumavia, who complimented the Government in its historic achievement for enacting its first ever Labour Reform legislation.

Mr Vayeshnoi said that other achievements included Fiji being cleared by the Credentials Committee to fully participate in the Conference.

“The Government had also successfully updated its reporting obligations under Articles 19 and 22 of the ILO Constitution and was not cited for any contravention of ILO Conventions during the review year.”

He further said that the Government was also not cited by the Conference Committee on the Application of Standards, which was tasked to consider various information and reports supplied by social partners and governments on the effect given to ILO Conventions and Recommendations.

Mr Vayeshnoi added that the ILO had committed to providing technical assistance to Fiji in the much needed area of promoting rural employment for poverty reduction in Fiji, and in the area of research and development for minimum wage setting to support the Reform of Fiji’s Wages Councils under the Employment Relations Promulgation 2007.
