The Copyright Tribunal is extending the closing date of an awareness competition for 16-25 year olds to Friday September 5 2008 to allow for more entries.

The Tribunal is calling on high school and tertiary students in this age group to write, sing, draw, act or do any kind of work which displays creativity, in keeping with the WIPO Day theme of “Respecting Innovation".

Categories that students can submit entries to are literary, artistic, musical or dramatic.

In their entries students must creatively demonstrate their understanding of the Tribunal’s role and functions, as outlined in the Copyright Act 1999.

The competition is in two age categories: 16-18 years, and tertiary students aged between 19-25 years. First prize in each age and works category is $200, second prize is $150 and third prize is $100. After judging, the winning entries will be displayed at the Alliance Francaise in Suva.

The Copyright Tribunal hears disputes about copyright issues, and a scheme for licensing. Groups such as FAVIA, APRA can bring a scheme of licensing to the Tribunal which can either confirm or vary the proposed scheme so far as it relates to cases of the description to which the reference relates, as the Tribunal considers to be reasonable in the circumstances. The tribunal welcomes applications to it in respect of its functions.

The Tribunal is made up of a chair, who can be a resident Magistrate (see section 203(4)) and two other members of the Tribunal appointed by the Judicial Service Commission (s203(2)).

The current members of the Tribunal are Mr Ajmal Khan, a resident magistrate (Chair), Mrs Marieta Rigamoto, retired Government Minister and now farmer, and Ms Marie Chan, a legal practitioner of Chan Law.

Section 14(1) of the Copyright Act of Fiji 1999 describes copyright as a property right that exists in the original works of the following descriptions: Literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works; Sound recordings; Audio visual works; Broadcasts; Cable programmes; and Typographical arrangements of published editions.

For further information, and to obtain copies of the WIPO booklets, contact Mrs Vaciseva Whippy, Secretary, Copyright Tribunal, 5th Floor Suvavou House, Suva or PO Box 2213, Government Buildings, Suva. T: 3309866 ext 826.
