Preliminary talks between Fiji’s main political parties and the Commonwealth special Envoy to Fiji, Sir Paul Reeves, about the proposed Presidential Forum has been described as fruitful and promising.

Addressing the media this morning, Sir Paul said he was optimistic of the outcome of his engagement with some political leaders about their inclusion in the Forum to be convened towards the end of August this year.

“ I’ve had three fruitful days of discussions with the leaders of political parties. To each of them I’ve extended the invitation to be part of the political forum,” Sir Paul said.

“ And I can report to you that there is broad support from all the political leaders I’ve seen to participate in this forum and to engage in political dialogue.”

The Special Envoy said most of the political leaders expressed the wish that the political dialogue also include but not confined to electoral reform and other issues.

Following this consultation, Sir Paul will prepare a report and recommendations to be considered by the Commonwealth Secretariat which is in continuous consultation with the United Nations regarding Fiji’s return to Constitutional and democratic rule.
