Mr Tom Ricketts
Minister for Industry, Tourism, Trade and Communications

Issuance of Digicel Fiji Limited PCMTS Licence

Venue:Fiji Island Visitors Bureau, Colonial Plaza, Nadi
Friday 11 July, 2008, 2 .30pm

This occasion marks another milestone in the Fiji Telecommunications history, I on behalf of the Government welcome with much appreciation Digicel Fiji Limited’s entry into the Fiji public cellular mobile market as the second network and services provider.

I understand that three years will have passed when the company will actually deliver commercial service, I am certain that the wait has all been worth the while for them and us, the people of Fiji.

Digicel’s contribution to the local economy in terms of the total capital the company will invest in Fiji as well as the employment opportunities as a result of their entry into the local market are most welcome especially at this time.

The public are eagerly looking forward to the choices Digicel has to offer in competition with services currently provided by Vodafone Fiji Limited.

We also value Digicel’s commitment towards the sector and for choosing Fiji as the regional hub for other public cellular mobile services facilities that will be established by the Digicel Group in other Pacific island countries, and we thank the company for this initiative and for their confidence in Fiji.

I understand that once it is established and operational, the hub will be Digicel’s first regional network arrangement and Fiji is indeed proud to be chosen by them as the hub location and to be associated with this milestone achievement.

The Group’s noted success and achievements in markets in the Carribean and some small states in South America is indicative of how the Digicel business will fare in Fiji and the South Pacific.

Thank you Digicel for this initiative and commitment and I wish the company success in its business venture in Fiji.

Vinaka Vakalevu
