17/7/08 - Cabinet endorses Fiji National Curriculum Framework

Cabinet has endorsed the Fiji Islands National Curriculum Framework and the current curriculum development work associated with it.

Cabinet has also approved the implementation schedule of the new school curriculum.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sports, Mr Filipe Bole.

Mr Bole said that the current school curriculum is seen as outdated and has been in existence since the 1990s and some curriculum documents even date back to the 1970s.

“Following broad consultation with all stakeholders across Fiji, the Ministry of Education decided to develop a contemporary and more relevant school curriculum.”

Mr Bole said that the NCF, which was completed in December 2006, identifies and describes the significant educational outcomes for students’ learning in Fiji’s schools from Kindergarten to senior secondary.

“Subjects are grouped into 7 Key Learning Areas (KLAs). Subjects in the same KLA have similar learning outcomes

“The NCF guides teachers throughout Fiji to design and deliver teaching and learning programmes that are coherent and relevant to all students’ needs, and those of the community.

“The NCF identifies what all students should experience and have the opportunity to achieve in their education, and emphasizes student-centred learning as opposed to rote learning.”

Mr Bole said that final drafts of Class level syllabuses have been developed for all KLAs, for Classes 3 to 6, while work on the development of other syllabuses are continuing.

He said that Teacher Support materials and training packages are also being developed, beginning with the primary school levels.

He further said that the new curriculum at each level of education should be phased in beginning in 2008 and continuing through to 2014.
