17/7/08 - Cabinet approves amendments to Fiji Military Forces (Leave) Regulations 1988

Cabinet has approved amendments to Fiji Military Forces (Leave) Regulations 1988.

The amendment will ensure that any leave entitlement granted in any overseas mission area by that mission’s leave regulations and taken by a member of the Forces, will be deemed to be part of the annual; leave entitlement under this Regulations.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister of Defence, National Security, & Immigration, Ratu Epeli Ganilau.

Ratu Epeli said that the RFMF has been involved in various overseas deployments in the past.

“Leave during these deployment was deemed separate from the leave entitlement of a service member under the Regulations here in Fiji.

“The current dilemma arises whereby a service member takes leave under the UN leave system, and then returns to Fiji to take further leave.”

Ratu Epeli said that this has been perceived by the current military command to be improper as it is tantamount to ‘double-dipping’.

He said that that Fiji Military Force (Leave) Amendment Regulations 2008 In keeping with the principles of fairness and accountability ensures that this ‘double-dipping’ does not occur.
