17/7/08 - Cabinet approves formation of Committee on Economic Strategies, Issues and Challenges

Cabinet has approved the formation of a Committee on Economic Strategies, Issues and Challenges (CESIC).

The Committee will comprise the Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office as Chair; the Permanent Secretary, Finance, National Planning & Sugar Industry; the Permanent Secretary, Industry, Tourism, Trade & Communication; the Permanent Secretary, Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation & Civil Aviation; the Chief Executive of FIRCA; and the Chief Executive of FTIB.

The Committee will co-opt members from Agriculture, Tourism, Fisheries & Forests, as well as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, when needed.

There will also be consideration given to some private sector participation/consultation to guide the discussions of the Committee.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Prime Minister said that the Committee will examine and formulate strategies to address the issues and challenges we face to promote economic growth.

“The formation of the Committee will ensure that the Government’s policies are rigorously evaluated and closely coordinated to strengthen policy effectiveness and ultimately result in a higher level of economic growth that Fiji needs.”

“It will work and co-ordinate closely with the Reserve Bank of Fiji’s (RBF) Macro-economic Committee, National Planning Office’s Development sub-Committee and the National Task Team and relevant working groups of the NCBBF on Growing the Economy.”

The Committee will report and submit its recommendations directly to the Office of the Prime Minister.
