About 130 Canadian youths arrived from Sydney yesterday to do community project work in Lautoka. The director of Joyful Visitation, Father Paul Nicholson, said it was the first time for youths from the diocese of London Ontario in Canada to visit Australia and Fiji. He said the youths had passed through Fiji while transiting at Nadi International Airport to get to Sydney for the World Youth Festival which ended last week. (FT)

Racial goodwill was the theme of the day as members of a rural community outside Labasa from different ethnic and religious backgrounds joined hands in building a church. According to the turaga ni yavusa of Nakoroqara of Vunimoli Village, Poasa Ligiraki, the $54,000 church would not only be a place for Christians to exercise their faith, it would also be a symbol of racial unity for generations to come. The church is rising from the dust with the collective contribution of different groups. (FT)

The Fiji Council of Social Services attributes the poverty levels in a recent study to panic increases in the price of food and fuel which has increased the cost of goods and services. FCOSS director Hassan Khan agreed with the statistics provided by Dr Wadan Narsey. (FT)

Fiji's economy took a nosedive before and after the 2006 coup and the regime's hopes to revive it has failed, says University of the South Pacific economist Dr Biman Prasad. Speaking at the Fiji Update 2008 lectures yesterday, Dr Prasad said while interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasised reforms to revive the economy, the results had not been achieved. (FT)
