Poor waste management is a fast growing subject of concern at all levels and the Pacific is struggling to manage it.

Signing the ‘Waste Minimization and Recycling Promotion Project’ with technical cooperation by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Director for Environment Mr Epeli Nasome said waste management is indirectly a driving force for tourism.

The project, which was initiated in late 2006, was submitted to JICA in early 2007. Waste Minimization and Recycling is an important component of the recently launched National Solid Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan.

The project commences in October with the aim to promote the 3Rs, which are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

“There is a lack of infrastructure and financial constrains leading to poor and ineffective awareness and legislations. Not a single rubbish dump is environmentally safe and socially acceptable, better waste management will lead to sustainable use of our land and development of tourism and trade,” said Mr Epeli Nasome.

The Director commended JICA’s initiative to assist in the project for the Western division such as Lautoka and Nadi.

The project term is three years and the lessons learnt from this project will be replicated to other parts of Fiji such as the Northern and central Division.
