INTERIM Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said his visit to the 2008 Olympic Games was also an opportunity to strengthen Fiji ties with China. In a Ministry of Information press statement, Commodore Bainimarama described his visit to the China as "very useful and productive one". He said the primary purpose of his visit was to attend the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and visit industries and projects of interest to Fiji in other parts of China. He said the trip gave him an opportunity to strengthen Fiji-China relations and create openings for trade. (FT)

FIJI has welcomed the Commonwealth's decision to base one of its headquarters in Fiji in the next few weeks. This is despite the suspension it faces from the working groups. The Prime Minister's permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said the establishment of Commomwealth headquaters was welcoming and pleasing news for Fiji. "We are pleased the Commonwealth has recognised Fiji's potential as a regional hub for the international office. We will do everything possible to facilitate the establishment of this headquarters," he said. The announcement was made by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamlesh Sharma who was at the Pacific Forum in Niue. (FT)

THE Ministry of Primary Industries is working with cocoa farmer to boost cocoa production in the Tailevu North area. The ministry in a statement said it, through its Agriculture Department, would work with Tailevu cocoa farmers to revamp production once again. (FT)

THE tourism sector does not and indeed cannot operate in isolation, says interim Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. He said tourism was very much part of the highly-competitive global tourism industry and market. Speaking at the opening of the Fiji Tourism Forum at the Sofitel Resort and Spa in Nadi yesterday, he said recent challenges faced by Fiji at a national socio political level "obviously have driven the adjustments made by tourism operators".
