26/8/08 - Fiji to host WHo regional committee meeting

Cabinet has approved that Fiji host the 61st session of the Regional Committee Meeting (RCM) of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Health, Women and Social Welfare, Dr Jiko Luveni.

Dr Luveni explained that the WHO RCM was the second most important meeting of the WHO with regional member states conducted yearly in the month of September.

“The RCM is the meeting conducted within the 6 regions of WHO that translate the key areas of work from WHA with member states. Fiji is included in the WHO Region of the Western Pacific Region (WPR).”

“They are management meetings where health programmes and health management assistance are determined and discussed.

“The annual work programme outline for countries for the year is also discussed and agreed to in the RCM.”

She said that Fiji is the first Pacific Island to have hosted an RCM in 1984.

The only other PIC to have hosted a RCM was New Caledonia in 2005.
