The Department of Environment is in the process of strengthening the enforcement procedure of Litter Promulgation 2008.

In order to make the new law more effective, the department will form a task force consisting representatives from the stakeholders like:

- Solicitor Generals Office
- Fiji Police Force
- Central Board of Health
- Department of Local Government
- Occupational Health and Safety Department

The Department will appoint four additional staff to be responsible full-time in coordinating the enforcement of the Litter Promulgation 2008in the Central.

The new Litter Promulgation 2008 was recently gazetted on August 15th, 2008 by the His Excellency, President Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uiluivuda.

The Director of the Department of Environment, Mr Epeli Nasome made the comments at a workshop on the new Litter Promulgation 2008, held at Holiday Inn yesterday.

Mr Nasome said the 2008 Litter Promulgation was implemented because of the ineffectiveness of the 1991 Litter Decree.

“The Litter Promulgation 2008 is intended to strengthen the required provisions for litter controls, said Mr Nasome.

Mr Nasome said prior to approvals of the litter legislations, consultations were undertaken with enforcement agencies of the legislation which included towns and city councils, police and inspectors of the Central Board of health.

“The Department of Environment has been liaising with the Solicitor General’s Office for advice on the amendments, and also on the weaknesses identified in the consultations,” he said.

“Consultations was done to made the litter law more effective and enforceable in the country."

Mr Nasome challenged the participants to work together for the betterment of a clean, healthy, and safe living and working environment so that Fiji can have a practical and effective Litter promulgation 2008.
