“We are trying to change the belief that prisoners are also human and most of them, victims of circumstances, also deserve a second chance to be successful members of society and to contribute positively to Nation Building”.

These were the words of the Principal Prison Officer, Mr Sevuloni Naucukidi in an exclusive interview with the Department of Information this morning.

Mr Naucukidi highlighted that the intention of the Commissioner of Prisons for 2008 is to be a year of Learning and Training.

“The Correctional Services have conducted a of variety of courses focusing on the enhancement of capacities, standards and professionalism.

“Very soon we will achieve the Commissioner’s target to enable 80 percent of staff to be computer literate.

“This was made possible by setting up of a computer lab at the training school in Naboro with donation of ten computers by the Marist ex scholar,” Mr Naucukidi said.

In stressing the relationship between inmates and prison officers, Mr Naucukidi highlighted this as vital as some of the inmates have expertise in areas like communication and they were able to conduct such courses.

“Here we are also practically illustrating to society that inmates are human beings and if given the chance they can excel in whatever work they are good in.

“Part of the common stigma inmates are branded with by society is that their positive capabilities diminish once they are imprisoned,”Mr Naucukidi said.

The Fiji Prison and Correctional Service is now vigorously engaging society in programs like the Yellow Ribbon Project to change these perceptions.
