Fiji will not hold elections in March 2009, interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama reiterated to the United Nations yesterday (Fiji time). And he pleaded for the participation of our soldiers in new peacekeeping missions around the world. Commodore Bainimarama told the 63rd United Nations General Assembly in New York that Fiji's relationship with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations had strained following the army's role in the coup and interim Government since December 5, 2006. An academic hopes that with the exit of Mahendra Chaudhry as interim Finance Minister, the 2009 national Budget will include expenditure policies which help stimulate the economy. Dean of Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of the South Pacific Professor Biman Prasad yesterday blamed Mr Chaudhry's economic policies for the massive economic decline of last year. Professor Prasad made the comment at the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions third delegates' conference at the Suva Civic Centre. (FT)

Former opposition leader has called on New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom and other missions in Fiji to review policies on their citizens and permanent resident holders who accepted appointments by the interim regime. Mick Beddoes said while there were travel bans imposed by these countries on Fiji citizens accepting roles in the military junta, nothing was done to their own people travelling in and out of Fiji and "aiding and abetting the act of treason".
