The enforcement of legislation against poaching is one of the major setbacks faced by fisheries wardens in the islands. Fisheries principal research officer Aisake Batibasaga said fisheries wardens lack resources to effectively police marine protected areas and their traditional fishing grounds (qoliqoli). (FT)

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group reaffirmed strong support for Fiji to have an election under the system prescribed in the 1997 Constitution by March and that changes proposed in the People's Charter was to be left to an elected Government. "The Commonwealth has made its support clear for the Forum roadmap to return legitimate government to Fiji," said New Zealand's representative on CMAG, Phil Goff. (FT)

University of the South Pacific academic Professor Biman Chand Prasad says the hypocrisy among some of Fiji's leaders is ruining the country. Professor Prasad said people who had mocked and condemned democracy during the 2000 coup in Fiji have become supporters of democracy after the 2006 military coup while the champions of democracy have become coup supporters. The comments were made at the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Union meeting on Saturday. (FT)

A Strategic Development Plan has been formulated for the Northern Division with the primary aim of boosting economic development. Acting Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu said the division had suffered many economic setbacks because of the lack of a plan in the past. Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Labasa Chamber of Commerce, he said the abundance of natural resource was wasted without utilisation. (FT)

Members of the St Andrews Presbyterian Church of Suva celebrated its 125th anniversary yesterday. Reverend Doctor Bruce Yeates said their congregation had come a long way since 1888. He said the original building of the church in Suva was destroyed in a cyclone in January 1895 and the wooden church which worshippers now used was opened and has remained since April that year.
