Small municipal councils should not be too dependent on rates for sustainable development, says Local Government Minister Filipe Bole. Mr Bole told municipal representatives at the annual convention of the Fiji Local Government Association at the Outrigger on the Lagoon that small councils should come up with a plan that could be discussed by stakeholders to assist in the running of the councils. The object, Mr Bole said was to improve services provided by the councils. (FT)

Municipal councils have spent more than five million annually for the maintenance and sustainability in keeping cities clean, says president of Fiji Local Government Association Ratu Peni Volavola. The Suva mayor said with the planting of more trees the cost of garbage collection and disposal services would escalate in the future and that a large percentage of the association's revenue from general rates was spent on the service. "The theme for this year's convention is clean cities and towns," he said. (FT)
