HIS EXCELLENCY RATU JOSEFA ILOILOVATU ULUIVUDA,
CF, MBE, KStJ, MSD, JP
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE FIJI ISLANDS

Message for Fiji Day, 2008

On 10th October, 1970, Fiji gained its independence after a century of being a British Crown colony. Today we celebrate 38 years of Independence.

The last 38 years has been challenging for us as a nation. However, in spite of these challenges, Fiji has always endured because of the strong resilience of our people.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Diverse Harmony for a New Fiji’. Our young nation is populated with people of diverse races, cultures, and beliefs. Our strength as a nation has always been our ability to build harmony in the presence of this diversity.

So many things hold us together, our love for our nation, our desire for a better future for our children and our determination to live in a country that is peaceful, prosperous and free.

This Fiji Day, we must focus on these common aspirations and I ask those who are entrusted with leadership of this nation and at all levels of society to build on these to create harmony for a better Fiji.

We must look forward to the future with hope. Together we can build a much stronger and stable nation if we reach inside our souls and find the goodness that is present in all of us, the goodness to forgive, the goodness to love, the goodness to put others before ourselves and the goodness that brings victory.

I wish you all a blessed Fiji Day Celebration.
