Message for Fiji Day 2008

Ni sa Bula Vinaka and Namaste.

I extend warm greetings to you all on this national day of celebrations marking the 38th Anniversary of our independence from Great Britain.

On this joyous occasion, we honour and salute the noble vision of statesmen and leaders who were the architects of our independence. We also acknowledge the hard work of all our people who have in the last thirty eight years individually and collectively contributed to building the Fiji we have today. And the journey that started on 10th October, 1970 continues with the challenge that we need to continuously think broader and outside the box, effectively embrace change and build a more progressive Fiji.

In line with the Presidential mandate, the Interim Government is steadfast in rebuilding Fiji into a non-racial, culturally vibrant and united, well governed and truly democratic nation. Our dream also is for a Fiji where the marginalised and disadvantaged are uplifted and where the indigenous people of our country are mainstreamed in a modern progressive society.

We have embarked on the long journey to translate this vision into reality and there is still much ground to be covered yet. I acknowledged in a similar message last year that the challenge in this process of rebuilding is to ensure that the people of Fiji collectively come together to share and work towards effectively achieving this vision. The Peoples Charter initiative aims to bring about this collaboration and to empower the people of Fiji to find possible solutions to problems that has beleaguered us for too long.

On this Special Day, making the 38th Anniversary of our independence, let us come together as one nation. Let us harness our diversity and create the much needed momentum to bring about the changes so necessary for building a peaceful and more progressive Fiji.
