The Attorney-General,Mr Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum has put the Fiji media on notice that he will not tolerate any contempt of court and people bringing the judiciary or the administration of justice into contempt will be called to account for their action.

His comments were in response to the Fiji Times article on its website(09/10/08) that quoted Mr Qarase as saying that the court ruling in today’s judgement was “a gross miscarriage of justice.”

He went on to say that the article amounted to a contempt of court and that it would not be only Mr Qarase to be called to account but media that published such comments would also be liable

“As the Attorney-General of Fiji,I have a duty to protect the independence of the court and I will not stand back to allow public confidence in the administration of justice to be undermined by people like Qarase. If he is unhappy with the court decision, his remedy is to appeal the decision to a higher court and not to insult the judges or the integrity of the judiciary,”he said.

The Attorney-General also noted that no comment in the Fiji Times article has been sought from him.
