Fiji Sun report inaccurate

The consultations undertaken by the National Council for Building a Better Fiji were done within the timeframe before the Education Minister’s directive and not as alluded to by the Fiji Sun today 31/10 in its page one story ‘ State Officials Ignore Orders’.

The Fiji Sun report was inaccurate because instead of clarifying the facts against the dates of the awareness programmes carried out in the Northern Division, it has chosen to sensationalize the story, thus creating unnecessary distraction for students that are currently seating external exams.

The consultations with the schools in the North were conducted between October 20 and 24. The directive from the Minister for Education was issued on Tuesday October 21 to be effective from Monday October 27 which was the start of the external Fiji Junior Examinations.

The Charter awareness team(s) that went to the schools were therefore right in completing their awareness programme up until Friday October 24.

Again this is another classic example of irresponsible journalism.

The Interim Government will not tolerate such misrepresentation, as it will not serve the purpose of Building a Better Fiji but instead only mislead the ordinary citizens who look up to the media for a well-balanced and responsible news presentation.

It would be preferable and appropriate for the media at this important time in Fiji’s History to do all it can to assist in the process of nation building that the Interim Government is engaged in and to ensure that our citizens have access to quality accurate and news content.

The media and government both have a role to play we must pursue it, not in confrontational and negative manner but with constant awareness that we both can contribute positively in Building a Better Fiji for All.
