19/11/08 - Cabinet approves review of Medical and Dental Practitioners

Cabinet has approved the review of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act particularly that relating to the registration and licensing of medical and dental practitioners in Fiji.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Health, Women and Social Welfare, Dr Jiko Luveni.

Dr Luveni said that Cabinet had agreed to the review of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act in 2006, but this process had been disrupted.

She said that the review will now be progressed again with consideration given first to the section on registration and licensing of medical and dental practitioners.

Dr Luveni said that the ‘once a life time’ registration of medical and dental practitioners needs to be changed and that a new yearly or two yearly registration be introduced and be linked to ongoing performance assessment and ongoing medical education of the practitioners.

“The Government has been very concerned with public safety and the trust people have on our health system following public outcry in recent medical negligent cases.

“There is urgency for medical practitioners to have periodic registrations rather than the existing practice of near lifetime registration

“This is not only to ensure the provision of effective service by medical and dental practitioners, but also to reduce the cases of medical negligence in Fiji.”

Dr Luveni said that comprehensive stakeholder consultations will be undertaken during the review process.
