2/12/08 - Cabinet endorses withdraw of the Fiji National Curriculum Framework (NCF) Implementation Plan

Cabinet has endorsed the withdrawal of the implementation schedule of the new school curriculum for Fiji.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts and Youth Sports, Mr Filipe Bole.

Mr Bole said that Cabinet had earlier approved the implementation plan which committed the curriculum for the entire school system from kindergarten through primary and secondary up to the Form 7 level, beginning in 2009.

“It is, however, considered prudent at this time to withdraw this plan due to inadequate preparation on key professional issues.”

Mr Bole said that the curriculum project was being implemented as part of the Fiji Education Sector Program (FESP) supported by AusAid.

He said that both the AusAid, Suva office and the FESP local manager and Australian partners have been consulted on the concerns and issues raised by the Ministry of Education.

He further said that an ongoing AusAid Review of the FESProgram has also raised some queries and reservations on components of the curriculum project.

He added that a totally new AusAid education sector program will follow this current phase, and it would, therefore, be prudent to wait for the AusAid Review report and the new directions to be bidded for in the next phase, before taking any further decision on the implementation plan.
