2/12/08 - Government vests state foreshore land to the Ports Authority of Fiji

The Government will vest three areas of state foreshore land reclaimed by the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) within the Port of Lautoka for the expansion of the facilities of the Port.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Mr Netani Sukanaivalu.

Mr Sukanaivalu explained that in order to expand its facilities, the Ports Authority of Fiji in 1990 had applied to the Director of Lands to reclaim an area of 13.8935 ha of foreshore land within the boundaries of the declared Port of Lautoka.

“After having satisfactorily complied with necessary procedures for issue of a foreshore lease, a Development Lease was granted to the Ports Authority of Fiji.

“In the process of obtaining a foreshore Development Lease the Ports Authority of Fiji took all necessary procedures for assessment of recompense for the loss of traditional fishing rights and made the necessary payment as assessed by the Independent Arbitrator for Fishing Rights Recompense.”

Mr Sukanaivalu said that the reclamation has been completed and the FPCL is now in the process surveying the various portions of reclaimed land.
