Govt is adamant on revitalizing the rice industry

The Minister of Primary Industries, Mr Joketani Cokanasiga today reassured farmers that Government is adamant about revitalizing the rice industry in Fiji.

Mr Cokanasiga was chief guest at the National Rice Day Celebrations in Tokotoko, Navua today and told farmers that Government through the assistance of the Indonesian Government is committed to revitalizing the rice cultivation in Fiji.

“Rice production has come into sharp focus not only for Navua but also for the Nation and indeed the whole world. With the assistance from our international friends we have increased domestic production both of traditional and new improved varieties,” Mr Cokanasiga said.

The Minister acknowledged the assistance of the Indonesian Government for all their support in the promotion of rice industry in Fiji.

“In particular, the assistance with training and ten walk behind tractors donated by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. Excellency thank you very much,” he said.

Mr Cokanasiga said one major area for rice cultivation is Dreketi where Stage one is now almost completed while Stage two the subject of intense activity and Stage three is receiving farmers attention.

“In the north, other rain fed areas have opened with new plantings in Bua and Cakaudrove. Production will increase from 9,800 metric tonnes to nearly 17,000 metric tonnes by this time next year,” he added.
