There's some relief for consumers as the price of fuel decreases from today. The interim Government will carry out a comprehensive review of the prices in sectors hit with increases when fuel prices were escalating. The Prime Minister's permanent secretary, Parmesh Chand, said now that fuel prices have come down "there is a reason to undertake a review given the significant decreases". (FT)

The economy will remain a large focus for 2009 and the substantial decline in fuel prices would be reflected in what people spend on goods, says interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. While Fiji cannot expect to escape the full brunt of the international financial crisis, Commodore Bainimarama said as a result of the prudent and improved financial management by the regime, Fiji's economic performance was projected to have a growth rate of two per cent this year. Interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has described 2008 as challenging and successful. In his New Year's message to the nation the commander of the Fiji Military Forces said 2009 would bring challenges as well as hope and opportunities. (FT)

Fiji will have an election but it must be held under a system that is democratic, says interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. In his New Year address, Commodore Bainimarama says this means the value of individual votes must be the same. (FT)
