The interim Prime Minister has told chiefs who went to the Bose ni Turaga at the army camp last month that the election will be held in December. Vunivalu of Serua Ratu Peni Latianara, who attended the meeting, said he posed the question to Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as to when the election would be held. (FT)

The Fiji Retailers Association agrees that 2009 will be a tough year for all sectors in Fiji and around the world. Association president Himmat Lodhia says the Reserve Bank and the larger economies such as Australia, New Zealand and US have forecasted a gloomy picture for 2009. (RF Gold)

The upgraded four- lane road at Laqere Bridge will be open to commuters before the new school year starts on January 20. (FT)

Roads in the North will have to undergo a major overhaul and check to ensure it is safe for motorists. Following the recent landslide as a result of heavy rain in Savusavu, the Ministry of Works has revealed that problem they is due to poor drainage and they are looking into the issue. The Fiji National Provident Fund implemented various schemes to help members affected by the 2006 coup, spending more than $250million, according to the 2007 financial report obtained by The Fiji Times. Financial assistance was also paid to people in the Northern Division who were affected by natural disasters. The 2007 annual report states that the Fund used $250.32million to help members that year. The majority of beneficiaries were civil servants. (FT)
