Ministry condemns sexual assault of minor

The Ministry of Education condemns the sexual assault of a 14 year old minor .

The Ministry wishes to reiterate its comments in its earlier response to the incident when a stepfather raped his step daughter.

The demeaning act of rape is costly, intolerable and unacceptable. Girls and their families who are affected by this grossly degrading experience will inadvertently experience both psychological and emotional trauma and depression.

Depression is a natural progression and rape would definitely worsen the situation.

Medical studies have proven that depression is more damaging to everyday health than chronic diseases such as angina, arthritis, asthma and diabetes.

Rape victims urgently need the support of the family and the community.

With the opening of the school year, only two weeks away, we wish to request teachers and students to be sympathetic and sensitive towards victims of rape who attend schools.

It seems obvious that the incidents of rape are becoming more prevalent in our rural and isolated communities.

For this reason, communities should use the social and cultural structures and systems that exist, to address these incidents of rape and sexual abuse.

Girls are warned to be extremely cautious.

They need to always let their friends and families know of their whereabouts.

It is best that they keep within groups, rather than move around individually.

Minister for Education Mr Filipe Bole
