Enforcement of legislation concerning employment of workers in the country remains an integral function of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Productivity.

And in 2004 a total of 5,751 workplaces were inspected compared to 6,000 inspections made in 2003 where the recoveries amounted to $1.1 million.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Mr Zinck explained that the reduction in the recoveries from $1.1 million in 2003 to $370,000 in 2004 indicated the high degree of compliance shown by employers after initial discrepancies were identified by my Ministry and corrected.

These figures, he said are different from those recovered during the settlement of complaints lodged with all the Ministry of Labour offices in the country where the total for last year was $440,000 compared to $270,000 in the previous year.

Mr Zinck assured the House that the Ministry will continue to be vigilant on the degree of compliance on all the labour legislation and will prosecute offenders.

The Ministry of Labour, he said will continue to attest foreign contracts of service in order to safeguard the rights of our workers in foreign countries.

"The Ministry will continue to develop the maintenance and promotion of a healthy and safe work environment by compiling regulations to make our world of work safe and healthy, for a safe and healthy worker is a productive worker, " the Minister said.

The jurisdiction of the OHS section of the Ministry also covers buildings and sports grounds.

On its compliance Mr Zinck said, nearly all the sports grounds in the country are now OHS compliant after the intervention of the Ministry and it is very important to note that we not unnecessarily interfering, but we are ensuring that the safety and the health of the players, spectators and the general public are secured.
