A measles outbreak is recently being experienced in Fiji as expressed in an alert put out by the Ministry of Health.

Measles, mainly a childhood illness resembling chickenpox, is synonymous with fever and a generalised rash, but is potentially more serious with complications that could even cause death.

It is easily spread from an infected person in a manner like the common flu – through coughing, sneezing or close contact.

In order to protect one’s family from measles, the Ministry of Health has recommended for anyone who is suspected to have measles to be isolated, not sent to school, given Panadol for fever and body ache.

They are also to have lots of and soup and maintain a proper and healthy diet.

In case of a fever persisting for more than two days, the ministry recommends parents to take their child to see a doctor or nurse immediately.

The Health Ministry also advises one to ensure that no one in one’s family comes into close contact with an infected person.

Also, if a child is between the ages of six months and six years, the Ministry urges for parents or guardians to have the child taken to the nearest health centre to be measles vaccinated.

Measles vaccination, says the Ministry of Health, is the best protection against measles infection.

In case of further information and advice, regarding measles, one can contact one’s nearest health centre or family doctor or by calling the Public Health Division of the Ministry of Health on telephone numbers:

- 3221517 or 3221511, or 3314988 in Suva, 6660411 in Lautoka and 8812522 in Labasa during working hours 8am-4.30pm (Monday –Thursday) and 8am –4pm on Friday.
