The 118 new recruits at the police passing-out parade yesterday have been congratulated on their choice to join the country's law enforcement arm and urged to persevere. Chief guest David Moore, who is the team leader of the Pacific Regional Policing Initiative (PRPI), congratulated the Fiji Police Force recruits on their achievements. (FT)

A dancer who collapsed during the opening ceremony of the Melanesian Arts and Cultural festival died before arriving at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital on Tuesday night. Vanuatu's government representative Pita Sakita said it was unfortunate to lose Francis Ike, who was in his early 50s. He said they were awaiting results of the post mortem examination due later in the week. (FT)

Former Agriculture Ministry permanent secretary Peniasi Kunatuba has denied receiving more than $6000 from the owners of a hardware company implicated in the alleged abuse of the Affirmative Action farming assistance scheme. The High Court heard yesterday that Mr Kunatuba was questioned during the recording of his caution interview by the second investigating officer assigned to the case, Inspector Raj Kumar. (FT)

A Great Council of Chiefs delegation will travel to China on October 20, for a two week-long development educational programme. The government of the People’s Republic of China is funding the tour and the final details are being discussed by the Fijian Affairs Board (FAB) and the Chinese Embassy. It is believed that a 10-member delegation, consisting of respective chiefs from the GCC and civil servants from the FAB, will travel to China and according to the Chinese Embassy counsellor, Fei Mingxing, details of the tour will be released later this week.
