Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase yesterday appealed to the people to remain calm after the army issued an ultimatum to the Government to withdraw “unjust” Bills, or resign. Mr Qarase called a meeting of the National Security Council yesterday to discuss the demand by army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama to the Government to drop the Qoliqoli Bill and the Promotion of the Reconciliation, Tolerance and Unity Bill. Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry have agreed that their new inter-party forum will discuss the native land issue and consequential changes to the constitution. After a meeting, the second this week, the leaders said in a joint statement that consultations on these two issues would commence early next month. (FT)

Approval to set up the new Fiji Water Authority could see the entity operating efficiently with clear commercial and social objectives, says Minister for Public Enterprises and Public Sector Reform, Savenaca Draunidalo. He made the comments after Cabinet approved a re-organization charter of the water and sewerage department. (FT)

The Canadian Government has praised Fiji’s multi-party Cabinet. Canada’s Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Deepak Obhrai told the House that the recent democratic elections in Fiji ensured the participation of different stakeholders in Fiji’s political arena. (FS)
