27/10/06 - Cabinet approves reviewed Radio and TV (Operating) Fee

Cabinet has approved the reviewed radio and television broadcast (operating) licence fees.

The new fees will be effected in 2008 with operators given a year’s advance notice.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Information and Communications, Mr Isireli Leweniqila.

Mr Leweniqila informed Cabinet that the new fees are based on the review of the licence fee structure that was formulated in 1989.

“The review in operating licence fees has identified and established a clearer fee structure comprising separate application fee, annual basic fee, commercial fee and non-commercial fee as they apply.

“Licence fees for each radio and television operator will have to be computed individually using the new structure, depending on the nature and size of their operation.

“The net effect will be a fairer formula for fees collection for operators and increased revenue collected for Government.”

Mr Leweniqila said that fee structure includes: Application Fees; Annual Basic Fee; Commercial Fee; and Non-Commercial Fee.

It will form part of the new Broadcast Licensing Authority’s regulations on license fees to be made by the Minister for Information and Communications in accordance with the Broadcast Bill, 2006.
