EPG pleased with access to stakeholders

The Pacific Islands Forum Eminent Person’s Group has expressed their gratitude for the availability of access to major stakeholders in Fiji with regards to their consultation on Fiji’s situation.

“We are pleased with the access the group was given to the various stakeholders,” the head of the EPG, Hon. Sato Kilman said.

The group concluded their four day consultation with various stakeholders including the His Excellency the President and the Prime Minister, members of the interim administrations, former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and members of the previous Government. They also met with with the Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Human Rights Commission and other civil societies and non government organizations.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama had earlier said that Fiji was ready to engage with partners bilaterally, regionally and multilaterally.

PM Bainimarama said the EPG is very important for Fiji as it creates a pathway to full engagement.

The Terms of Reference (TOR) for the EPG were; to assess the underlying causes and the nature of the overthrow of the Government of Fiji by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF); To assess the prospects for appropriate resolution of the present situation in Fiji in the short and medium term, and obstacles to such a resolution; To identify steps that the parties in Fiji may take to move swiftly and peacefully toward the restoration of democratic government, within the boundaries of Fiji’s constitution and the rule of law; and To consider the role the Forum and its members might most usefully play in assisting Fiji achieve this outcome.

Having completed their consultations, the group will now make a report to be presented to the Forum Foreign Affairs Ministers (FFAM) at a meeting to be held soon in accordance with its TOR.
