It is imperative that the Fiji language is strengthened so that it does not diminish amidst the other languages in our beloved nation of Fiji says HE The President Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda.

Ratu Josefa made the comment in message to launch the Fijian Monolingual Dictionary in Suva today.

“ I have also been told that this Fijian Monolingual Dictionary contains lots of words explaining the Fijian ways, perceptions and beliefs of the Fijian indigenous people,” he said.

“It also contains names of many things associated to the life of Fijian indigenous people which will help the ordinary Fijian understand his ways, beliefs and perception better.

Ratu Josefa said the foundations of Fijian Monolingual dictionary will strengthen and learning of Fijian language in all schools in Fiji and also at university level.

“It will also be essential in the use of Fijian language to teach other subjects in the Fijian language,” he said.

“I firmly believe that this launching of the Fijian monolingual language will urge writers to write books in Fijian which should strengthen the knowledge and understanding of the Fijian language.

Ratu Josefa said he hopes that this very importance initiative will not end here at this launching of the Fijian monolingual dictionary but will inspire and encourage us all to strengthen the Fijian language.

“ Work must continue into the review and search into language and how the Fijian language has used it, and also how it has been used in the business world,” he said.

“ The Monolingual dictionary has been based from the Bauan dialect but I hope and encourage that this will also inspire the same for other Fijian traditional dialects.

Ratu Josefa said language is like a treasure that is unique to every nation and people.

“Every nation has its language but it will depend on its people whether it is preserved and kept properly or whether it dies away,” he said.

“ I hope that this will urge and inspire Fijians to use Fijian language at all times as this is one of our treasures that we are know for.

Ratu Josefa sincerely thanked the American Fijian Foundation, Government of Australia and Japan, South Pacific Commission, Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Education, Fijian Educations Unit for your efforts to ensure that this Fijian Monolingual Dictionary is launched today.
